Water Stains On 1x6 Roof Sheathing

The arrows in the picture above are pointing to water stains in the 1 x 6 roof sheeting. These water stains are from damaged roofing materials. If you notice, there is a roof vent of some type and most of the water damage, seems to be around it.

This isn't uncommon and is usually caused from poor roofing installation and of course, as the building gets older, problems like this will become more frequent. Any stains in the attic are usually from water and the water leak should be repaired to prevent further damage.

Here's a good example of roof sheeting with no damage. There are no water stains, splits, cracks, loose knots and the building material itself looks like premium lumber. Don't forget that your roofing protects your home from the elements like water, wind and the sun.

Home Repair Tip: Make sure that your roofing materials are in good condition and if any repairs need to be made, make them as soon as possible. If the roof looks like it needs to be replaced, it probably does. Check with a local roofing contractor if you have any questions about your roof and how much longer it will last if it doesn't need to be replaced.

Composition roofs usually lasts between 15 and 50 years, depending upon the type of roofing material on your home.
