Ice Damage From Broken Pipes
This water damage is a good example
of your water supply pipes freezing and then as the water expands,
inside of the pipes, it can produce enough pressure to crack or separate
the pipes from their fittings.
If the water is not turned off to the home, it will continue to leak,
creating an endless stream of water, eventually creating a nice ice
sculpture in your kitchen. Ice can do tremendous damage to your home and
you should be aware of this problem, if you live in cold climates.
Most homes in colder climates, where freezing temperatures are a
problem, will have drainage valves located in the water supply system,
for drainage. These drainage valves will be located in the lowest
possible section of the water supply pipes.
If you have no idea where this drainage valve is located, contact a
plumber in your area for advice on where to look. If there isn't a
drainage valve, the plumber could always install one for you. This could
save you a lot of money, if the pipes were ever to burst.
Home Tip: if you're going on vacation or leaving your home for an
extended period of time (longer than two days) I would suggest that you
drain the water supply pipes, to avoid your pipes from freezing and
causing damage to your home.
This video provides you with an example of pipes bursting and keep in
mind that, even one pipe breaking can cause tremendous damage to your
house.
