Fungus On Roof Shingles

Now what could be causing fungus to grow on wood roof shingles, underneath a composition roof. I've got three words for you, water, moisture and of course more moisture. Whenever wood is wet for a long period of time, there could be multiple things growing on them, one of these things can be be fungus.

Here's a good example of some of the problems that you might have later on, when you don't follow the manufacturers recommended installation instructions. Make sure that you always read the installation instructions and they're usually located on the individual composition roof shingle packages.

Here's another case where you get what you pay for. Someone decided to roof their home on their own and try to save a couple of dollars, or the homeowner actually hired someone that they thought were competent roofers. Either way, a little bit of research, could have saved this homeowner a few dollars.

What were looking at in the picture above, is fungus growing at the edge of the roof facia board. There's a good chance, that there is more fungus, mold or mildew, growing underneath the composition roofing. Whenever you run into a situation like this, there's a good chance that this isn't the only spot on your roof, that has fungus growing on it.

Home Repair Tip: I would definitely recommend removing the two layers of roofing and replacing the roof. If you are going to replace the roof yourself, I would suggest that you use caution, when walking on your roof.

You could have structural problems, underneath your roofing materials, especially if the fungus is starting to damage the roof sheeting.
