Painted Wood Windows

Painted wood windows seem to be part of our home building past. It's not real common to see wood windows that need to be painted anymore.

Most home builders are now using vinyl windows, wood clad windows and some are still using aluminum windows.

If you have wood windows and you need to paint them, you might want to give some serious thought to hiring a professional painter who is experienced enough to paint them.

This could get very expensive, because anyone that has enough experience to paint this type of window, usually charges a small fortune to paint them.

The biggest problem with inexperienced do-it-yourselfers that paint wood windows is the fact that they usually paint them shut. In other words, you won't ever be able to open or close your windows again after these guys are finally done with them.

I actually spent eight hours one day, trying to get a wood window open, because we were restoring an older home that had four windows that were in desperate need of repair.

Each one of these windows had been painted shut and if I was to guess, it was probably at least 15 years since they had been opened.

Home Repair Tip: If you do have painted wood windows that you can't open, plan on spending a few hours working on each window with some chemicals and the scraper.

There is a good chance, that the window hardware won't operate properly either. You can still find some of the old window hardware at older hardware stores and if you can't find it there, try looking for this hardware on the Internet.
